Live 2-Hour CME for Controlled Substances Law Wednesday, December 5

​​Florida's New Opioid-Prescribing Law (HB21) requires all physicians complete mandatory CME education by January 31, 2019.


Winter Haven Hospital is hosting a live CME on Prescribing Controlled Substances with special guest speaker, Marc Kaprow, DO, FACOI.

Learning objectives:


  • Recognize the scope of the opioid abuse crisis in Florida.

  • Explain new Florida laws and rules regarding prescribing controlled substances and comply with practitioner requirements under the new regulations.

  • Identify inpatients who would benefit from non-opioid alternatives and non-pharmacological therapies for pain while maintaining optimal patient care and pain management.

  • Implement best practices in the outpatient setting when prescribing controlled substances and consider alternative therapies.

  • Explain the mechanisms of action that trigger addiction in certain patients and not in others.

  • Identify patients at risk of addiction following opioid treatment for acute pain and implement prevention strategies.



This course satisfies the new (2) Hour "Prescribing Controlled Substance" course requirement for physicians licensed in Florida that hold a DEA license. This 2-hour course is AOA Category 1A and AMA PRA Category 1 and MUST be completed by January 31, 2019 and at each subsequent renewal.


FOMA is accredited by the AOA to provide continuing medical education for physicians. FOMA designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1A credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
