Physician Referral Program

​​​The BayCare Physician Referral Program is a voluntary referral service program for primary and specialty care physicians. The BayCare Customer Service Center refers thousands of Tampa Bay area residents every year to physicians, and we can help enhance your practice by connecting patients to you too. 

Available 24/7, our Customer Service Specialists are trained to respond to inquiries and direct patients to the most appropriate source of care. When patients call us at 1-800-BayCare, we can refer them to a physician who meets their unique needs.

Criteria to Participate

In order to participate in the referral service, the following criteria must be followed:

  • - Physicians must maintain approved medical staff privileges and hold active medical status at one or more of BayCare’s facilities or be a member of BayCare Physicians Partners.
  • - A referral service application must be completed.
  • - New patients must be able to secure an appointment within two weeks from the referral request date for a primary care physician and four weeks for a specialist.
  • - Profile information and insurance carriers must be updated every year or as requested by BayCare.

Appointment Access Options

Preferred Access

Do you have the capacity to see new patients within three business days and the desire to grow your practice? Preferred Access may be the right option for you. Available to participants of the Physician Referral Service, selecting the Preferred Access option allows the BayCare Customer Service Center to connect you to patients who wish to make a first-time appointment within three business days

Criteria:

  • - Enrolled in the Physician Referral Program
  • - Agree to see new patients within 3 business days

Urgent Same-Day Access

Are you a specialist with availability to see new high risk patients same-day? Urgent Same-Day Appointment Access may be an option for you. Available to participants of the Physician Referral Service, selecting the Urgent Same-Day Access option allows the BayCare Customer Service Center to connect you to patients who’ve been seen in an urgent/emergency care setting and have been referred by an attending physician for immediate follow-up care.

Criteria:

  • - Enrolled in the Physician Referral Program
  • - Agree to see new patients who’ve been seen in an urgent/emergency care setting and have been referred by an attending physician for immediate follow-up care on the same-day

Stark Law

In order to comply with Stark Law, we use our Safe Harbor statement for all referral inquiries: All physicians participating in the referral service are employed, BayCare Physician Partner members, or have approved medical staff privileges at one or more BayCare facilities. All referrals are rotated and new patients are able to secure an appointment within a timeframe based on the physician’s specialty. Physician participation is free and voluntary.

How Do You Know If You Are Receiving Referrals?

The Customer Service Specialists will warm transfer calls to your office after matching you based on the consumer requirements. The Customer Service Specialist will identify himself or herself and indicate that you were selected from the Physician Referral Service. Finally, the Specialist will inform your staff that they have a potential patient on the phone, allowing you to know which referrals resulted from this program.  If you are able to accommodate the patient within the appropriate timeframe, the Specialist will connect the customer to your office, allowing your staff member to book the appointment at that time.
